Striking a balance that feels at once expansive and intimate, Montana Jewel by Melbourne-based multidisciplinary studio Homeroom Studio is a testament to thoughtful reinvention, preserving the home’s original framework while crafting a space that amplifies a feeling of authenticity and warmth.

“History emanates within the walls of Montana Jewel”

Homeroom studio sought to retain the home’s original framework, and at the same time, reimagine the interiors to create an enduring space that celebrates the lifestyle and personal interests of those who call it home.
“History emanates within the walls of Montana Jewel,” Homeroom Studio founder and director Romy Dankner says. “Drawing on our client’s affinity for collecting artifacts throughout their travels, the design reflects a deep reverence for traditional practices and heritage techniques, blending them seamlessly into a contemporary landscape,” she adds.
Finding a harmony between the interiors and architecture by ADDARC, the spatial reconfiguration centralises communal areas, responding intuitively to the personal rhythms of the client’s daily lives. In the kitchen, this translates to a separation that maintains connection with the butler’s pantry—an exercise in balance that is echoed throughout the entire space.

What was the initial brief/concept behind Whispering Dunes?
“Respecting the home’s original character whilst seamlessly introducing contemporary charm was paramount for both the client and Homeroom Studio. As busy professionals with young children, the clients required a calming, tranquil sanctuary within the heart of bustling inner Melbourne. The home was reimagined to honour its heritage roots with considered spatial planning and mindful materiality selection, ensuring a highly refined outcome imbued with elegance and authenticity.”

With the clients’ impressive art collection top of mind, Homeroom Studio embraced soft, neutral tones to reimagine a Melbourne home, creating an elevated, serene retreat.

Thoughtful materiality, gentle lighting and a harmonious palette work together to foster a serene, sophisticated retreat.

When the owners of a grand home in Melbourne’s Caulfield North approached Romy Dankner of Homeroom Studio wanting a refresh of the main living spaces, it came with a caveat – the renovation would have to complement, and incorporate, their extensive collection of art and objects. “It was imperative there were locations dedicated to their pieces, and the tones were considered throughout the process to ensure the design worked with the collection,” Dankner says.

A harmonious blend of heritage and modernity, Whispering Dunes is one of the latest completed projects by Homeroom Studio. The primary objective of the redesign was to enhance rather than modify the house’s original character, which is why finding the ideal balance between preserving the property’s inherent appeal and a modern, contemporary revamp was crucial.
To ensure a refined result, the design team at Homeroom Studio used an adaptive reuse approach in which they carefully decided on sustainable materials meticulously implemented in the house. The family home has been thoughtfully designed, focusing on spatial planning that facilitates a practical family home environment. The result is a house that feels modern yet classic, in the middle of bustling day-to-day life. This elegant home with its open layout perfectly accommodates the dynamics of family living all the while providing a peaceful haven.

Whispering Dunes by Homeroom Studio is a great example of sustainable design.
The living area exudes sophistication with its welcoming, modern wrap-around couch and deeper-hued armchairs, which perfectly frame the room. All the furniture is placed in front of the main wall, decorated with the home’s distinct marble feature. The marble adds a sensation of motion, a subliminal nod to the vibrant, ever-moving city life. An electric fireplace is seamlessly embedded in the wall adding warmth without disrupting the minimalist aesthetic of the room. Striking a balance between style and utility, the space provides built-in shelves that supply a space for storage or displaying décor. Lastly, the room is pulled together with a circular centerpiece, that brings a contemporary look to the design.

Whispering Dunes by Homeroom Studio in Melbourne embodies a refined balance between past and present, creating a serene escape grounded by Made by Storey flooring.

The palette is enriched by a stone selection with heavy veining, bringing movement and depth to the design, and grounding the home in a natural sensibility.
The design approach for Whispering Dunes was deeply influenced by the home’s surroundings. “Given its proximity to a park and the established trees surrounding the property, we wanted to create an immediate feeling of stillness and tranquillity upon entering the home,” explains Romy Dankner, director of Homeroom Studio. The aim was to provide the clients and their young children with a peaceful sanctuary, blending traditional detailing with modern materiality to create a cohesive and elegant space that speaks to both heritage and contemporary sensibilities.
