Identity.ae - Whispering Dunes

Year: 2024

A harmonious blend of heritage and modernity, Whispering Dunes is one of the latest completed projects by Homeroom Studio. The primary objective of the redesign was to enhance rather than modify the house’s original character, which is why finding the ideal balance between preserving the property’s inherent appeal and a modern, contemporary revamp was crucial.

To ensure a refined result, the design team at Homeroom Studio used an adaptive reuse approach in which they carefully decided on sustainable materials meticulously implemented in the house. The family home has been thoughtfully designed, focusing on spatial planning that facilitates a practical family home environment. The result is a house that feels modern yet classic, in the middle of bustling day-to-day life. This elegant home with its open layout perfectly accommodates the dynamics of family living all the while providing a peaceful haven.

Whispering Dunes by Homeroom Studio is a great example of sustainable design.

The living area exudes sophistication with its welcoming, modern wrap-around couch and deeper-hued armchairs, which perfectly frame the room. All the furniture is placed in front of the main wall, decorated with the home’s distinct marble feature. The marble adds a sensation of motion, a subliminal nod to the vibrant, ever-moving city life. An electric fireplace is seamlessly embedded in the wall adding warmth without disrupting the minimalist aesthetic of the room. Striking a balance between style and utility, the space provides built-in shelves that supply a space for storage or displaying décor. Lastly, the room is pulled together with a circular centerpiece, that brings a contemporary look to the design.

The Local Project - Whispering Dunes

Year: 2024

Whispering Dunes by Homeroom Studio in Melbourne embodies a refined balance between past and present, creating a serene escape grounded by Made by Storey flooring.

The palette is enriched by a stone selection with heavy veining, bringing movement and depth to the design, and grounding the home in a natural sensibility.

The design approach for Whispering Dunes was deeply influenced by the home’s surroundings. “Given its proximity to a park and the established trees surrounding the property, we wanted to create an immediate feeling of stillness and tranquillity upon entering the home,” explains Romy Dankner, director of Homeroom Studio. The aim was to provide the clients and their young children with a peaceful sanctuary, blending traditional detailing with modern materiality to create a cohesive and elegant space that speaks to both heritage and contemporary sensibilities.

The Local Project - Muted Restraint

Ivory House

The embedded relationship between natural light and the interior experience plays an important role in creating the feeling of peace among the chaos of family life.

The owner of Ivory House, interior designer and Homeroom Studio Creative Director Romy Dankner collaborated on the project, resulting in a uniquely personal and considered home. Working with Tecture, the aim was to create a home that could facilitate daily life and serve as a place of reprise for the family of five. Located in Caulfield South, the established and leafy surrounds invite something of grandeur – a quality the resulting home achieves with a contemporary approach and a sense of disconnection and seclusion.

Habitus - All about luminescence

Year: 2024

Described as “a place for daily life and a sanctuary for the family”, the concept of luminescence is at the core of the design philosophy underpinning Ivory House. The interiors are suffused with natural light, creating an ambiance of timelessness and tranquility. The choice of muted tones adds to the sense of serenity, allowing the surrounding greenery to infuse bursts of colour into the space, creating a visual spectacle.

Ivory House has been designed by Homeroom Studio’s creative director, Romy Dankner, in collaboration with Tecture. The layout revolves around an indoor-outdoor orientation of aligned active zones. It’s a deliberate arrangement that maximises natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and enhancing the connection between the interior and the exterior. Meanwhile, the pool acts as an extension of the living space, further blurring the lines between inside and outside as well as adding a whole new aesthetic.

The interior palette complements the ivory bricks, whose presence on the exterior is notable and yet understated. Materials such as polished almond concrete and natural linen sofas create a subdued yet elegant base palette, while furniture and joinery follow a linear design language to promote simplicity and spaciousness.
